    The Introduction of Chinese Language & Culture College

    The Chinese Language & Culture College of Beijing Normal University is founded on the basis of the Chinese Teaching Center (1965—1996) and the College for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (1996—2000). The college has nearly 40 years of experience teaching Chinese as a second language.

    As Beijing Normal University\'s important gateway to the world, the Chinese Language & Culture College shoulders the responsibility of teaching foreign students (including undergraduate students, long-term students and short-term students) coming to China to study Chinese language and culture. The college also fosters the native and foreign post-graduate students majoring in linguistics and applied linguistics and/or Chinese language and character study. In addition, the university provides training for teachers teaching Chinese as a second language and also promotes research in this field. The college is a comprehensive teaching and research institute, admitting more than 1,000 foreign students every year.

    Teaching Objective

    1. Obtain the HSK certificate of higher level (HSK 9 above).
    2. Able to communicate with Chinese people fluently.
    3. Complete the undergraduate dissertation in Chinese.
    4. To acquire basic knowledge of the Ancient Chinese Literature, Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature, Chinese History.
    5. Familiar with Chinese political, economic, culture and even deeper into Chinese society.

    The courses can be divided into the following 3 types: courses on language skills, linguistics, and Chinese literature and culture. Some of the courses are compulsory and some are optional. Language skills courses include reading, oral class, listening comprehension, newspaper and magazine reading, etc.; linguistics courses mainly include modern Chinese, ancient Chinese and language theory; Chinese literature and culture courses mainly include Chinese modern literature, Chinese society and customs, etc. The college also offers business Chinese and executive Chinese for diplomats and businessmen working in China. Students may also take electives such as HSK preparation, Chinese calligraphy, Chinese painting and Wushu.

    Course name: Reading and Writing class preparatory, grade 1 (100-101-102)
    Course categories: reading and writing skills training
    Three semester teaching time: not less than 324 hours, 6 hours/week)
    Content summary: the teaching purpose of this course is based on the student to carry on the preliminary reading and writing skills training, trains the student to have the preliminary Chinese reading and writing ability. Teaching content including mandarin phonetics teaching, enable students to master Chinese language system of initials, finals and tones.

    Course name: Reading and Writing class, grade 2 (201-202)
    Course categories: reading and writing skills training
    Two semester teaching time: not less than 216 hours, 6 hours/week)
    Content summary: the teaching purpose of this course is through further Chinese reading and writing skills training, training students\' ability of reading mediocre Chinese articles and more fluent Chinese writing ability, so that the students can more freely in daily life and learning to use Chinese. Teaching contents are text reading teaching, further correct the students\' sound, rhyme and tone pronunciation.

    Course name: Reading and Writing class, grade 3 (301-302)
    Course categories: reading and writing skills training
    Two semester teaching time: not less than 216 hours, 6 hours/week)
    Content summary: the teaching purpose of this course is on the basis of reading and writing training, causes the student to expand vocabulary, improve the analysis and the ability to use words, to further improve their reading and writing ability, can make students more familiar, flexible, and accurately grasp and use Chinese, and be able to understand and appreciate Chinese at a higher level of rich and colorful language phenomenon. Paying attention to the combination of read and write, through introducing the reading skills training and knowledge of Chinese culture, reading, cultivate the students deep meaning of the text understanding ability; Writing, improve students\' ability in Chinese the use of written language and expression.

- Requirement

Between 18 and 40 years of age; high school diploma or higher academic degree certificate; good grades

Note: Applicants under the age of 18 should submit original guardian notarizations in triplicate issued by Beijing Notary Public Office.

HSK requirement: Original HSK level 6 or above or new HSK level 5 (with 180 points or more)

Graduation certificate in languages other than Chinese or English should be translated into Chinese or English and be certified by notarization.

7. Two letters of recommendation

From professor or associate professor or equivalents

8. Letter of guarantee

The guardian should write out his/her name, nationality, occupation and address (if an organization acts as the guardian, reference to the organization should be made clear).

9. Permission from the previous university for tranfer students

A student who has studied in China and wants to transfer to another university must provide the permission from original university.
