Introduction


Founded in 1956, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (BUCM) is one of the earliest higher education institutions for Chinese medicine in the People’s Republic of China. It is the exclusive traditional Chinese medical institution that entered the “211 Project” for national development and directly under the supervision of Ministry of Education. And it was co-established by Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The university owns three campuses respectively located in He Ping District, Wang Jing District and Liang Xiang District.


BUCM consists of 15 teaching institutions: School of Preclinical Medicine, School of Chinese Materia Medica, School of Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Tuina, School of Management, School of Nursing, School of Humanities, the First School of Clinical Chinese Medicine, the Second School of Clinical Chinese Medicine, the Third School of Clinical Chinese Medicine, International School, School of Continuing Education , School of Distance Education, School of Chinese Classics, Graduate School and Training Center for Students from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao.


BUCM has striven to build a professional talents training system emphasizing high-level education  for the new century. There are 11 undergraduate programs, including Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Tuina, Chinese Materia Medica, etc., 45 postgraduate programs and 41 doctoral programs.

 By now there are a total of 27833 students in the campus. Within this total, 9279 are full-time students, 34.2%  are Master's and PhD candidates and 13.3%  are international students.


BUCM is among the first batch of Chinese medical institutions qualified for  offering doctoral programs and establishing post-doctoral research stations. The 3 first-grade subjects, namely Chinese Medicine, Chinese Materia Medica, and Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine, are all accredited to grant doctoral degrees. The University now has 2 state-level first-grade subjects, 15 state-level second-grade subjects, 48 ministry-level subjects of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 10 Beijing municipality-level subjects. The key subjects of BUCM are in the leading position among the country’s Chinese medicine colleges’.

 BUCM owns 3 affiliated hospitals: the Dong Zhi Men Hospital (the First School of Clinical Chinese Medicine), the Dong Fang Hospital (the Second School of Clinical Chinese Medicine), and the Third Affiliated Hospital (the Third School of Clinical Chinese Medicine). It also owns 36 teaching hospitals for all students’ clinical teaching and internship. Since its establishment, BUCM begun to accept foreign students, which was earlier than other Chinese medicine universities in China.  BUCM has trained more than 30,000 Chinese medicine professionals from 90 countries and regions in the world. In recent years, BUCM has established fruitful cooperative projects with 103 famous universities and academic groups in 29 countries and regions.


 BUCM publishes state-level, first-class academic periodicals, entitled  Journal of Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Modern Chinese Clinical Medicine, Education of Chinese Medicine, and Journal of Traditional Chinese Medical Sciences ( English Version). These are important windows for Chinese medicine exchange.
