Chinese Language Summer School
- General Information


    The PKU Chinese Language Summer School is organized and administered by the International Students Division, and taught in the School of Chinese as a Second Language. Upon completion of the program, those students who meet the assessment criteria will be issued with a certificate and transcript from Peking University. The 2016 PKU Chinese Language Summer School offers four-week, six-week, and eight-week long Chinese courses. Students will be divided into 3 levels—elementary, intermediate, and advanced. There will be four hours of teaching each day, a total of twenty hours per week. To help students to better understand China, the 2016 PKU Chinese Language Summer School will also offer a series of free lectures on China‘s society, history and culture, in addition to the language course.


    Four weeks(session 1): July 4 - July 29, 2016;

    Four weeks(session 2): August 8 – September 2, 2016

    Six weeks: July 4 - August 12, 2016

    Eight weeks: July 4 - August 26, 2016

    The specific dates for the programs will be confirmed in the admission letter.

    Application Period

    Summer 2016 Program: Online applications will open on February 23, 2016

    Applications are on a ‘rolling’ (first come, first served) basis – until all places are filled

    Fees & Payment

    Application fee (non-refundable): RMB 400

    Tuition fee (including fees for textbooks):

    Four-week program: RMB 6,000

    Six-week program: RMB 8,000

    Eight-week program: RMB 10,000

    Refunds Policy

    Any student who wishes to withdraw from the program must submit a written request prior to registration. Upon approval, the tuition fee will be refunded in accordance with the guidelines. If the applicant requests to withdraw after registration, the tuition will not be refunded.

    Program Details

    Class hours: Monday to Friday, four hours per day (twenty hours per week).

    Mandarin course: All courses aim to improve students’ proficiency in Mandarin Chinese. The compulsory courses are Intensive Reading and Spoken Chinese. All courses are taught in Chinese.

    Class arrangements: Classes will be divided into 3 levels—elementary, intermediate, and advanced. Students will be required to take the Mandarin proficiency test before registering for classes. There will be no more than fifteen students in each class. Students pursuing the eight-week program will have to take a second proficiency test during the sixth week of the course.


    Culture lectures will be held on three afternoons per week and each last two hours. All lectures will be conductedin English. Transcript and Certificate: Upon completion of the language course, those students who meet theassessment requirements will be issued with a certificate and a transcript. Students who attend more than 75% of culture lectures will receive an additional certificate of attendance.

    Extracurricular Activities: To enhance the students’ experience of China, PKU will arrange several visits to well-known attractions in Beijing, and organize student exchange activities.

    About Accommodation

    Accommodation is not arranged by PKU Chinese Language Summer School, and is not included in the tuition fee. Accommodation should be arranged by the student. This allows participants to arrange accommodation that suits their personal requirements and budget.
