Electrical and Computer Engineering
- General Information

    Brief Introduction

JI offers programs in Mechanical Engineering (ME) and Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). Although students are asked to declare one of the two programs as their major when they apply for JI, they may choose to switch majors in the future.

Irrespective of the intended major, all undergraduate students take the same core courses in the first two semesters. Students are required to declare majors in the spring semester of their sophomore year. To be qualified for declaring a major, students must have completed the first year level Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Introduction to Engineering and Introduction to Computer & Programming with satisfactory grades and a cumulated GPA specified by individual programs.

    Outcomes of JI Undergraduate Degree

Graduates of the Institute’s undergraduate programs will have:

    1. An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering within their chosen field.
    2. An ability to design, conduct, and interpret the results of engineering experiments.
    3. An initial ability to design products and processes applicable to their chosen field.
    4. An ability to work effectively in diverse teams and provide leadership to teams and organizations.
    5. An ability to formulate engineering problems and develop practical solutions.
    6. An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.
    7. An ability for effective oral, graphic, and written communication.
    8. A broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering decisions in a global, social, economic, and environmental context.
    9. A recognition of the need for and an ability to engage in life-long learning.
    10. A broad education necessary to contribute effectively beyond their professional careers.
    11. A sense of responsibility to make a contribution to society

    ECE  Major Requirements

The rapidly converging world needs more professionals with profound knowledge of electrical engineering, computer engineering, and computer science. The Electrical and Computer Engineering program at UM-SJTU Joint Institute is an interdisciplinary program. It is supported by the EECS Department of UM and EIEE School of SJTU.

Assuming the student has passed all the courses required by all programs including Humanities and Social Science:

    ECE Compulsory Courses

    A. Core Courses for ECE (20 credits)
    • Discrete Mathematics - 4 credits
    • Introduction to Circuits - 4 credits
    • Introduction to Signals and Systems - 4 credits
    • Programming & Elem. Data Structures - 4 credits
    • Probabilistic Methods in Eng. - 4 credits
    B. Program Subjects (29 credits)
    • Electromagnetics I - 4 credits
    • Intro to Logic Design - 4 credits
    • Intro to Semiconductor Device Theory -4 credits
    • Intro to Comp Organization - 4 credits
    • Technical Communication - 1 credits
    • Technical Communication - 4 credits
    • Major Design Experience (MDE) course –4 credits
    • Graduation Thesis - 4 credits

Note: Technical Communication can be taken independently of any ECE course, but it is a prerequisite for Advanced Technical Communication.Advanced Technical Communication must be taken concurrently with a Major Design Experience (MDE) course.

    ECE Electives Courses

    Core Electives (4 credits)

A minimum of 4 credits from one of the following categories:

    • Circuits: 4 credits
    • Computers: 4 credits
    • Electromagnetics/Optics: 4 credits
    • Signals and systems:4 credits
Upper Level ECE Technical Electives (8 credits) 400-level courses among Principles of Photonics Digital Signal Processing and Analysis Control Systems Analysis and Design Automatic Control, etc.
Flexible Technical Electives (16 credits) Flexible technical elective requirements may be fulfilled by taking 300- or 400-level courses in either ECE or ME at the JI. Courses taken from other engineering or science departments of SJTU must be approved by the program advisor. The JI Academic Affairs Office keeps a current list of pre-approved courses.

    General Electives:

Once the required courses (mathematics, physics, chemistry, related subjects, and core subjects) are completed, the balance in "general electives" to achieve a total of 150 hours is needed.

The purpose of the general electives is to allow students flexibility in tailoring their degree program to suit their specific needs. They may include engineering courses from other disciplines used to fulfill, a minor or for personal enrichment and can be taken from any department of the JI or SJTU.Students are limited to 3 credit hours of performance courses (for example, sports or classes , in the schools of Music or Art).

Students should select their general elective classes either to explore an area of cultural interest or to explore an area of professional interest such as:

    • Management, business, or finance classes in preparation for working in industry.
    • Additional Electrical Engineering classes to go into more depth than the limited program of technical electives allows.
    • Engineering classes in other departments in preparation for grad school outside Electrical Engineering.
    • Classes to prepare for further study outside engineering such as medicine, dentistry, law or education.
    • Additional language, literature or culture classes to prepare for a career in the global economy.

    Futhur Study and Future Career

In the past years. Over 80% of our graduaes continue to study at graduate schools among which 90% are top graduate schools of the world and 95% are in the U.S. Those who chose to work have shown strong competence in the job market.
