- General Information

    Program Introduction

    Each semester over 50 countries arrive at The Tsinghua University International Chinese Language & Culture Center (ICLCC) interact with each other and learn about their various backgrounds and cultures.

    Each academic year is divided into two semesters, spring and autumn, and students are able to apply for admission according to their desired duration and learning needs. Each semester runs for 18 weeks, with classes Monday to Friday, four hours a day.


    ICLCC offers three grades (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced) with a total of eight different levels among these grades in order to meet the various needs of students. Students are assigned an appropriate class level based on a placement exam taken at the beginning of the semester.

    In addition to the required “Speaking and Writing” component of the course, ICLCC also offers optional elective courses (held in the evening) in order for students to have the opportunity to better understand Chinese culture. These courses run for two hours a week (for an additional fee) and students can choose from courses such as Chinese Character Class, Chinese calligraphy, Chinese songs, Erhu, HSK counseling, Business Chinese, and Colloquial Chinese and Chinese Colloquial Expressions.

    First Year

    This course aims to teach students the correct pronunciation of Chinese words, how to write Chinese characters, and the basic grammatical structure of Chinese. With this basic grasp of the Chinese language, students will be able to apply their Chinese knowledge to get around on a day-to-day basis.

    Second Year

    Continuing from their first year knowledge, students are taught more vocabulary, grammar, speaking, reading, and writing skills. In order build and solidify upon this knowledge, students are given more opportunities to read articles and write short essays.

    Third Year

    Professors will introduce more difficult compound sentences and rhetorical styles, and aim to improve students’ reading abilities as well as their ability to express themselves articulately in Chinese. Students will be encouraged to participate in class discussion, conveying their ideas in a more fluent manner. Students will also be expected to read longer, more difficult articles on a number of topics such as Chinese history, geography, economics, and culture.

    Beginners 1 Speaking:

    This class is suitable for absolute beginners. Each lesson includes: the lesson text (with romanisation), new words, explanations of the texts, key language focus points and exercises. Each text strikes a balance between moderation, practicality and interesting topics. During class, there is pronunciation training closely combined with learning phrases, educational activities based on communication and practical results, and a teaching method that places the focus on students. After completing this course, students will have mastered 300 basic words related to university and daily life, and will be able to understand simple topics closely related to personal life, such as the family, shopping and the weather. Students will also be able to engage in the most basic forms of daily communication with the help of body language or objects.

    Beginners 1 Comprehensive Chinese:

    This class is suitable for absolute beginners. The main focus is placed on the essential areas of pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and characters as a starting point. This is combined with related linguistic and cultural knowledge as well as language usage rules to comprehensively develop students' listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. The texts are in a dialogue format (accompanied with English translations) and include topics such as daily activities, travel, study, sport and exercise. They also cover basic skills such as saying 'hello', extending greetings, asking questions, making requests, extending invitations, making evaluations, making arrangements to meet, giving suggestions, etc. Upon completing this course, students will have mastered the Chinese romanisation system (called 'pinyin') as well as the essential character strokes and stroke order, and will have gained a basic understanding of the links between Chinese characters and words. Students will have also learnt basic word order and sentence patterns, and will have begun to come in contact with Chinese culture.

    Beginners 1 Listening:

    This class is suitable for absolute beginners. The texts touch on communication in daily life, study and social interaction, including greetings, shopping, transport, food, hobbies, directions, accommodation, services, the weather, and making plans and arrangements. Class exercises include listening comprehension of simple sentences, question and answer dialogue, and short articles. This class centres on listening, therefore combining listening with speaking, listening with reading, and listening with writing. In addition, there is pronunciation training throughout the entire course (assisting students with consonants, vowels, tones, the neutral tone, 'er-hua' and tone marks). Upon completing this course, students will be able to correctly pronounce single characters and words, and will be able to engage in the simplest forms of daily communication.

    Beginners 2 Comprehensive Chinese:

    This class is suitable for students who have learnt the most basic Chinese words and grammar, and who can engage in simple conversation. The texts mainly consist of conversation and short articles, with the focus placed on key language points and recurring vocabulary. Students will be taught new words, basic sentence patterns and simple grammar. Through repeated practice, group exercises and role play, students will quickly master all the communication topics taught in class. Upon completing this class, students will will be able to write a short 100 character essay, and will be able to converse fluently with other Chinese speakers about simple topics.

    Beginners 2 Speaking:

    This class is suitable for students who have learnt the most basic Chinese words and grammar. The arrangement of the themes and the dialogue format within the texts are lively and interesting. This is combined with pronunciation training and the study of words and phrases. The content of the texts are intertwined with Chinese cultural themes, and there are plenty of different exercises to complete both during and after class. Through studying this class, students will be able to use Chinese to engage in simple daily conversations with reasonable fluency.

    Beginners 2 Listening:

    This class is suitable for students who have basic listening and speaking abilities and who have learnt simple sentence patterns related to daily life, study and social interaction, as well as topics such as shopping, eating out, seeing the doctor, renting a place, making plans and work. The texts in this class centre on dialogue. While developing pronunciation and conversation listening skills, this class also places emphasis on teaching essential words and simple sentences in order to improve the student's ability to guess the meanings of certain words and overall knowledge of sentence structures. After completing this class, students will be able to understand simple everyday conversations within specific contexts.

    Pre-intermediate Comprehensive Chinese:

    This class is suitable for students who know 600 Chinese characters and who have a good grasp on beginner level grammar. The teaching objectives of this class are to effectively enhance vocabulary, reinforce and improve Chinese grammar and practical language knowledge, enhance knowledge of Chinese culture, and develop reading and writing skills. Students will receive a large amount of reading and writing instruction, such as learning how to talk about their own past education and work experience, learning how to describe things and people's appearances, learn how to explain a place's culinary culture, etc. Using comprehension of the texts as a foundation, the teacher will work hard to improve students' Chinese communication skills through leading them to obtain an effective input of linguistic and cultural knowledge, while also combining vocabulary, grammar and character related exercises.

    Pre-intermediate Speaking:

    This class is suitable for students who have basic Chinese listening skills, who have learnt simple sentence patterns. The texts touch on special sentence structures and complex sentences, as well as simple topics related to daily life, study and social interaction. Students will have the opportunity to practice their speaking for at least two thirds of the total class time. The teacher will set challenging, realistic and practical tasks, give summaries and corrections when needed, and assist students to grasp key language points and new words throughout the tasks.

    Pre-intermediate Listening:

    This class is suitable for students who have beginner level Chinese listening skills and proficient knowledge of simple Chinese sentences. The texts touch on daily life, study and social interaction, and are centred on dialogue (buying things, eating at the restaurant, asking for directions, seeing the doctor, renting a place, making friends, the weather, making plans, work, etc.). Students start with listening comprehension of simple words and gradually build up to understanding simple sentences and short conversations. Students will eventually be able to understand a one minute everyday conversation and a short article, and will be able to quickly adapt to social communication.

    Pre-intermediate Reading:

    This class is suitable for students who know approximately 600 Chinese characters and about 1000 commonly used words. Through teaching character recognition skills and the rules surrounding using characters to form words, this class will develop the student's ability to guess the meanings of new characters and words. Through timed reading from the textbook, students will become used to reading silently. Through condensing sentence elements, students will also learn to be able to read long sentences. This class will lay the foundation for future systemic learning and the acquisition of reading skills.

    Intermediate 1 Comprehensive Chinese:

    The main objectives of this class are to consolidate and enhance fundamental grammar, expand vocabulary, and develop the student's ability to utilise all the words and sentence structures they have studied to smoothly express themselves in segments of writing. The selected texts in the teaching material are closely related to real life and lay emphasis on reflecting the diverse nature of Chinese culture. The texts and exercises all stress the recurrence of vocabulary and key language points, and help with students' acquisition skills. During class, the teacher ensures the material content is current, gives clear explanations and allows for plenty of practice. They help students improve their ability to build sentences and paragraphs, strengthen their ability to differentiate between the semantic differences of certain words, and also become more proficient in using complex sentences.

    Intermediate 1 Speaking:

    This class is suitable for students who have basic listening and speaking skills, who have mastered general Chinese sentence structures and important compound words. The texts touch on general communication topics related to life, study, social interaction, work, etc. The class exercises mainly consist of vocabulary exercises and complete conversations. After-class exercises mainly consist of oral presentations and conversation practice. The teacher will set all sorts of tasks, throughout which students will be asked to organise to meet up and master their language skills, and in turn improve their spoken communication skills.

    Intermediate 1 Reading:

    Before reading, the teacher explains unfamiliar characters and words, ambiguous sentences and complicated grammatical phenomena. After this, students pre-read the text to gain an understanding of the main idea and structure. Through speed reading, students understand and look for each type of information contained within the text. In the final stage, students re-read the text and answer other specific questions. In regards to reading techniques, students will learn how to guess the meanings of certain words, as well as how to grasp the main idea of the passage via the main clauses and clue words. Students will also learn how to identify the main topic sentence or paragraph and grasp the main content of the article through analysing the article's main theme.

    Intermediate 1 Listening:

    This class is suitable for students who have basic listening and speaking skills, who have proficiently learnt general Chinese sentence structures, complex sentences and special sentence structures. The texts centre on dialogue and are supplemented by short articles. These mainly teach students to understand a dialogue style and eventually transition into a narrative style. Each lesson is divided into 'intensive listening' and 'general listening'. The teacher gives tailored explanations in order to help students dispel their frustrations and grasp the basic meanings of a range of expressions. Listening and speaking are combined throughout this class in order to enhance students' comprehension of a range of words and to consolidate their grasp on new words and key language points.

    Intermediate 2 Comprehensive Chinese:

    This class is suitable for students whose Chinese is at an intermediate level. Through studying this class, students will master multiple complex sentences, as well as several fixed phrases and sentence patterns. Students will also have a grasp on complex sentence structures and the logical links between phrases.

    Intermediate 2 Speaking:

    This class is suitable for students who have general Chinese listening and speaking skills, who know more than 2000 words and who have a good grasp of general Chinese grammar. This class mainly teaches students about grammar related to special colloquial patterns and special vocabulary that posses contextual functions. The teaching material reflects the inner meanings of Chinese culture from several different angles, including topics such as the relationships within modern Chinese families, comparisons between Chinese culture and foreign cultures, consumer protection and advertising. Through in-class exercises and after-class discussions, this class will gradually improve the student's ability to express themself further.

    Intermediate 2 Reading:

    This class is suitable for students who know more than 2000 common Chinese words. The reading materials are in the form of texts written in a literary style, with a wide range of subject matter. Through tailored reading instruction, this class will improve comprehensive reading skills, in particular comprehension skills based on phrases and discourse. This course uses flexible reading methods and instruction through tasks with specific objectives to enrich reading techniques, improve comprehension accuracy, strengthen linguistic intuition, and expand vocabulary. Upon completion of this class, students' reading speeds will be required to exceed 150 characters per minute.

    Intermediate 2 Listening:

    This class is suitable for students who have general Chinese listening and speaking skills, and who have a good grasp of more than 2500 Chinese words and general Chinese grammar relating to complex topics within the areas of everyday life, study, work, society, culture, etc. The aim of this class is to teach students to be able to understand larger articles. Through methods such as finding key words and filling in the blanks, this class will teach students to listen to recordings while simultaneously analysing the main meaning contained within the speaker’s words and connecting sentences. This will also indirectly improve speaking skills.

    Advanced 1 Comprehensive Chinese:

    This class focuses on improving students' abilities to use literary expressions and further developing students' abilities to differentiate between words with similar meanings and to use them correctly. Students will also learn a certain number of Chinese idiomatic expressions. The textbook systematically sorts out commonly used complex phrases and conjunctions, allowing students to gain an understanding of how complex sentences are being used within the texts. It also introduces how designated words can be substituted or omitted, as well as other related pragmatic knowledge. The aim of this class is to develop speed reading skills as well as phrase and text expression skills, and to allow students to develop a high degree of understanding and appreciation of the rich and colourful nature of the Chinese language. This class also aims to allow students to freely use all of the vocabulary that they have learnt, to actively express themselves and to fully complete all communication tasks.

    Advanced 1 Reading:

    This class is suitable for students who know more than 3000 commonly used Chinese words. This class focuses on highlighting phrase and text reading comprehension skills. It helps students to grasp the text structure and logical sequence of ideas and phrases, and to improve comprehension of many types of Chinese literary styles and written texts. This class follows a set structure of timed reading, post-reading exercises and discussions, and explanations of the main passages.

    Advanced 1 Speaking:

    This class is suitable for students who have good listening and speaking skills, who know more than 3000 Chinese words, and whose Chinese proficiency allows them to express themselves fluently and appropriately at a complex level. The texts use contemporary topics, focusing on developing students’ abilities to comprehensively express their own views and opinions. Through class presentations, themed discussions and debates, this class helps students to understand and strengthen logical links within complex sentences. It also helps students to complete clear phrases that are semantically and grammatically correct, and that suit the context in which they are being used.

    Advanced 1 Writing:

    This class focuses on model essays, narrative writing, argumentative writing and practical writing. The teacher combines explanations of the rules surrounding forming the phrases and paragraphs within the model essays with foundational knowledge of rhetorical devices. The teacher provides detailed analytical explanations of errors made by students in their essays, and helps students reach the goal of being able to write complete and clearly structured essays with few errors. After one semester of planned writing instruction, students will be able to smoothly write a 400 character essay within approximately 30 minutes.

    Advanced 2 Comprehensive Chinese:

    This class has rich subject matter with a large focus on culture and complex sentence structures, introduces a large amount of new vocabulary, and encompasses many genres. The teacher mainly teaches students advanced level vocabulary used in literary language, news publications and formal spoken Chinese. The teacher also incorporates Chinese idiomatic expressions, popular sayings, fixed expressions, euphemisms and rhetorical devices into explanations and exercises. The teacher solves issues with conjunctions, function words and word order that appear when students are communicating in Chinese, improving students' overall reading and writing skills.

    Advanced 2 Speaking:

    This class is suitable for students who have a good grasp on intermediate level Chinese grammar. After completing this class, students will have mastered a certain number of advanced level vocabulary, cultural words and literary expressions. Students will be able to understand many different complex Chinese language materials, and will be able to communicate, engage in discussions and express their opinions about general topics within the areas of everyday life and certain professional fields. Through studying the texts for this class, students will gain an accurate, vivid and deep understanding of traditional Chinese culture, values and thoughts, as well as contemporary Chinese culture.

    Advanced 2 Reading:

    This class consists of a total of four hours per week. During each class students will study one article of between 600 and 1000 characters in length. The subject matter covers areas such as economics, society, culture and science and will improve comprehension of many different writing styles. Through methods including speed reading, intensive reading and finding information contained within the texts, this class will develop speed reading skills. Through a summary of special structures contained within certain Chinese words and a summary of commonly used simple ancient Chinese words, this class will help students to accurately understand literary words, as well as how these words are used to form the literary style of writing. In order to study this class, students are required to know more than 1300 Chinese characters and have a reading speed of around 150 characters per minute. After completing this class, students' reading speeds will have reached between approximately 220 and 250 characters per minute.

    Advanced 2 Writing:

    The aim of this class is to improve literary expression skills. Through analysing model essays, and through broad to specific feedback on students' work, this class will allow students to improve their Chinese writing skills throughout a process of correcting errors. The teacher may selectively introduce knowledge related to Chinese writing, such as Chinese punctuation, transitioning, linking, correlating, giving examples and quotations, using metaphors and personification, putting questions forward, and other rhetorical devices. After-class writing practice forms an important part of this course. The teacher will assign students a combination of writing topics while providing guidance on areas such as Chinese expressions and logical links, and will help students to complete high quality essays with ease.

    Advanced 3 Comprehensive Chinese:

    This class is aimed at strengthening the ability to differentiate between formal and informal Chinese, expanding literary and colloquial vocabularies, and enriching oral and written expression. The model texts are deeply insightful and the language used is well refined, allowing students to experience the rich and diverse nature of Chinese writing. Students will systemically analyse Chinese morphology and prosodic features, as well as function words, sentence structures and four character phrases that occur within literary and formal Chinese. This is then combined with extracting topics from the texts or from the subject matter that is of most interest to the students and asking them to use spoken and written Chinese to link sentences together and use words correctly.

    Advanced 3 Reading:

    The teaching material for this class consists of contemporary and international publications.

    Through speed reading open-minded and discussable topics, this class will allow students to improve their Chinese language skills. Students will expand their vocabularies through reading materials from related contexts that are abundant in set phrases and idioms. Through explanations and exercises, the teacher will help students to understand the subject matter and main themes of the texts. Students will learn the meanings of related words, set phrases and idioms, and will be able to use them correctly. Students will also be able to accurately complete 'true or false' exercises based on articles, paragraphs and sentences.

    Advanced 3 Writing:

    This class is suitable for students who have proficiently mastered essential grammar constructions, who are familiar with literary style Chinese. During class, the teacher will assist students to rectify mistakes and strengthen their confidence in using literary Chinese through analysing model essays, simultaneously reading through and discussing the text, giving students feedback on their work, selecting writing topics and freely expressing their thoughts on students' writing. Students will also further improve their writing abilities through practice.

    Advanced Elective Classes

    Chinese Grammar:

    This class is suitable for students who have been studying Chinese for more than one year. The grammar points covered are mostly those that learners frequently have trouble with. Making use of a large quantity of focused exercises to strengthen students’ grasp of and ability to use the grammar points, it will help learners to understand and digest native content.

    Classical Chinese:

    This class is suitable for high-level Chinese learners. It covers basic knowledge of Literary Chinese, as well as commonly used words and literary quotations, thereby helping learners to understand the rules of word-creation in modern Chinese, and improving their ability to understand and express themselves in formal Chinese. The teaching content focuses on texts with a strong narrative element, placing emphasis on combining Classical and Modern Chinese, as well as aiming to be both practical and engaging.

    Advanced Listening:

    This class is suitable for students with a vocabulary of around 3,000 words. It trains students’ ability to quickly process and respond to spoken language, and to understand various forms of audio material, including long conversations, interviews, debates, discussions and lectures. The teaching process progresses through the steps of pre-listening and intensive listening practice. In the pre-listening section, the teacher builds on the foundation of students’ pre-class preparation, explaining new vocabulary and important sentence structures, after which students listen for gist, and try to grasp the structure of the passage. In the intensive listening section, students are called upon to pick out the important facts and details, and precisely understand the meaning of the passage.

    Chinese Characters:

    Introducing basic knowledge such as character strokes, stroke order, components and structure, this class helps learners to gain an understanding of character composition, and to grasp some simple rules for constructing characters. At the same time, it also uses real examples of characters to illustrate some of the eccentricities and interesting phenomena involved in Chinese character composition, adding interest to Chinese study, and lets students appreciate that Chinese characters also have an artistic quality. All of this is designed to help students to memorise characters effectively. It also teaches the proper methods for effective study, which will prove invaluable for beginning students.

    Chinese Songs:

    This class will combine your love of music with your Chinese study. Graceful lyrics paired with flowing melodies, with the help of the teacher’s detailed explanations and patient instruction, will allow you to naturally improve your pronunciation, expand your vocabulary, absorb knowledge of expressive language, and understand more about Chinese culture, all at the same time as learning your favourite songs.

    Calligraphy:

    From the “four treasures of the study” (brush, ink, paper and inkstone) and the history of calligraphy, to the basic formation of strokes and the art of composition, this is a class where you can experience Chinese art for yourself. From holding the brush and practicing posture, practicing the strokes, and practicing character components, all the way to mimicking the style of famous calligraphers, it will help you to improve your calligraphy skills. If you want to be able to recognise and approach Chinese characters, and to appreciate the unique artistic and cultural charm of Chinese calligraphy, then this class is for you.

    Erhu:

    The èrhú (二胡, Chinese two-stringed violin) is an ancient instrument which is full of romantic charm. It is also one of the representative musical instruments of China. By taking this class, you will understand the structure and basis of erhu musical theory, gain a grasp of elementary playing techniques (basic bowing, fingering, changing strings, shifting position, vibrato etc.), and gain a basic grasp of pitch and rhythm.

    Intermediate Business Chinese:

    This class mainly focuses on two types of content. One is business-related social activities, such as employee awards ceremonies, auctions, and recruiting, and the other is writing business documents, such as invitations, résumés, and investment plans. By taking this course, you will be able to understand basic material regarding business events, and communicate in basic business situations.

    HSK:

    This class is aimed at students preparing to take the HSK. It takes the vocabulary from the HSK, compiles and organises it, and helps learners systematically study and master increasingly difficult content. Building on this basis, it also incorporates teaching of relevant grammar points. Based on students’ levels, sticking closely to the outline of the test, combining explanation and practice, it solves the problems involved in various aspects of listening, reading and writing, and can quickly improve your performance on the HSK.

    Colloquial Chinese and Chinese Colloquial Expressions:

    Chinese colloquial expressions (惯用语 guànyòngyǔ) use few words, but are expressive and rich in meaning. Correctly using these expressions can not only make your language more lively, vibrant and vivid, it can also make it refined and humorous. The teacher will start off by explaining the form, structure and meaning of the expressions, placing emphasis on their use and meaning within the language, and will teach students how to correctly use them communicatively.
